Star-gazing at Calitzdorp Spa

Wim Filmalter reports:

My first Galilean Nights event was organized at Calitzdorp Spa, some 150 km from my home, into the Karoo. I did an introductory talk: Our place in the Universe – Size in Perspective to an audience of teachers, learners and resort guests totaling 30 people. A well-received, inter-active discussion was followed by  a session of viewing the Moon and Jupiter, first through a small refractor at 40 magnification(to compare with what Galileo saw) and then through a 300mm Dobsonian at 188 mag. The exclamations and facial expressions made the day! One Dutch tourist could not believe that only at his senior age  he was able to see Scorpio! Discussion was resumed  the next morning in the hot pool...
