International Year of Astronomy - South Africa

To do List for IYA 2009

(under development)

This is an evolving list of projects and activities that people can volunteer to do. It covers everything from small easy-to-complete projects to big co-ordinating ones. Everything from producing posters to serving as a national co-ordinator for international events.

As people continue to become involved in IYA this list is meant to give everyone an idea of the needs of the astronomy education and outreach community and a choice from a range of activities that they can become involved in and thus can contribute to the bigger IYA and astronomy picture.

The categories are:

Development of Resources (posters, school workshops, activities, techonologies, etc)

Networking (establishing and maintaining contact with various organisations or individuals in order to further the cause, e.g. how do we put astronomy facts onto cereal boxes?)

Outreach (getting out there and spreading astronomy to people everywhere e.g. school visits, public talks, stargazing)

Mentoring (providing support to school science clubs, individuals interested in astronomy, parent clubs, etc)

Media (availability for media interviews, produce press releases, regular articles, podcasts, etc)

Local champions for international projects (bringing to the local scene benefits from the global cornerstones, IYA special projects etc)
